Un mois en cale sèche – partie 1
“Pablo est en si mauvais état que ça?” C’est le premier commentaire que j’ai lu ce matin sur un post facebook @saltymatey. En buvant mon café, j’ai réalisé que la réponse n’est pas si binaire. Un peu de contexte est nécessaire, et je me suis retrouvé tout à coup devant l’inévitable: je dois finalement mettre notre blog à jour !
Alors revenons “un peu” en arrière. 8 mois. Il y a 8 mois, dans une contrée lointaine (ou plutôt dans une mer non pas si lointaine), nous étions à l’eau et heureux, voguant dans Bahia de Los Angeles. BLA; une région de la mer de Cortez (MX) où vous troquer internet et les épiceries contre des vues imprenables et dramatiques, des requins baleines nageant autour de votre bateau et le bonheur de manger le poisson que vous avez pêché il y a quelques heures autour d’un feu de camp, sur une plage déserte. Tout ça en regardant le soleil se coucher sur les cactus avec quelques bons amis. Du snorkeling le matin, la pêche au harpon l’après-midi et le ukulele au coucher de soleil. C’est vraiment dur à battre.
Nous avons passé quelques semaines à BLA, avec une grande question qui nous trottait en tête. Devrions-nous sortir Pablo de l’eau ? Voyez-vous, à l’extrémité nord de la mer de Cortez se trouve un chantier naval avec des tarifs plus qu’excellents et l’avantage d’être très proche de la frontière américaine pour se munir de pièces de bateau et autres matériaux. Si des travaux doivent être effectués, il est difficile de trouver mieux. C’est pourquoi la même question revenait sans cesse entre Cass et moi. Y a-t-il du travail à faire sur Pablo ?
Nous avions déjà fait plusieurs travaux importants et urgent au Panama et nous avions réparé beaucoup de choses. Pablo était prêt à traverser un océan (c’était notre plan après tout!)… Du moins nous le pensions. Mais la dernière inspection du gréement avait révélé des signes qui ont semé le doute en nous. Notre confiance dans le gréement dormant, ces câbles qui maintiennent le mât en l’air, était donc mise à l’épreuve.
Et la peinture de la quille, qui sert à éviter que l’entièreté des fonds marin établissent résidence sous le bateau, était au bout de son efficacité… Une couche de peinture fraîche ou deux ne seraient pas un luxe non plus. Est-ce que cela suffisait pour faire une sortie de l’eau ? Mettre notre vie de croisière sur pause pendant un moment ou continuer à nager ? Pendant des semaines, nous avons fait des allers-retours, changeant sans cesse de décision. Puis un soir, avec des amis (Pulsar) qui se posaient la même question, nous nous sommes tous mis d’accord pour dire que la croisière devait être une activité de plage et non de ponçage de coques. En mer, nous resterions !
Mais comme la plupart des plans de croisière, le nôtre a complètement changé quelques jours plus tard, lorsque nous avons appris que d’autres amis allaient sortir de l’eau. Tout à coup, l’idée de ne pas être seuls dans le chantier nous a fait douter de nos choix. Et cet ami étant un spécialiste des gréments de bateau, nous pourrions bénéficier de son expertise pour avoir l’heure juste. Il a suffi que nous changions d’avis pour que Pulsar recommence à douter eux aussi et que, trois jours plus tard, les trois bateaux se dirigent ensemble vers Puerto Peñasco pour se mettre à sec. Voilà pour les plans !
Plus de baignade pour nous MAIS, je n’arrêtais pas de dire à Cass que ce serait une sortie de l’eau agressive et relativement courte. 3 semaines. Top ! Juste assez pour mettre un peu de peinture, descendre le mât pour inspecter et valider que l’entièreté du gréement est OK et, avec un peu de chance, régler quelques problèmes de vibration lorsque nous naviguions au moteur. Nous avons transformé notre salon en un bunker de salle des commandes, choisis soigneusement toutes les pièces dont nous avions besoin et sorti Pablo de l’eau le 3 octobre 2020…
